When individuals perceive their own vulnerability, they focus on the immediate details of the situation, such as their own feelings of discomfort, embarrassment or self-criticism. This can lead to a negative self-perception of self-disclosure, as they may dwell on the “messy” aspects of being vulnerable.
On the other hand, when an individual responds to someone else’s displays of vulnerability, they focus on the broader meaning and implications of the situation, such as the courage and humanity displayed by the individual, leading to a more positive perception of others’ vulnerability.

Researchers indicate that, contrary to popular belief, people want to be around someone that is real and flawed instead of seemingly perfect.
Further, vulnerability and openness are essential to the well-being of a relationship. Research shows that self-disclosure is associated with greater liking and closeness in social interactions and it can help people find more common ground.
Vulnerability also deepens romantic bonds since being perceived as authentic by a partner is associated with greater trust, satisfaction and commitment in relationships. It gives partners the opportunity to observe and appreciate each other’s genuine selves rather than stoic versions they cannot relate to.
When individuals are open and honest about their feelings, fears and insecurities, it can create a mutually safe space for emotional connection and acceptance. Vulnerability allows them to empathize with each other’s experiences and provide support during difficult times.

“When confronted with challenging situations, self-compassionate people are kind to themselves, see adversity as inevitable and face the difficulty of their circumstances without overexaggeration,” the researchers explain.
Researchers suggest that these healing effects are due to the three components of self-compassion:
- Self-kindness. This involves being warm and understanding toward oneself when facing difficulties, perceived failures or painful emotions. Self-kindness entails treating oneself with the same kindness and care that one would offer to a good friend in similar circumstances. This practice allows individuals to approach their own vulnerability with understanding and acceptance, helping to mitigate feelings of self-criticism and discomfort.
- Common humanity. Instead of feeling alone in one’s challenges, recognizing that suffering, imperfection and struggles are part of the shared human experience fosters a sense of connection and belonging. This helps individuals contextualize their vulnerability within the broader human condition and counteract the sense of shame or separateness often associated with the beautiful mess effect.
- Mindfulness. This involves being present and aware of one’s thoughts, feelings and experiences without judgment or avoidance. Mindfulness allows for a compassionate and balanced response to one’s needs and emotions, which allows individuals to acknowledge and accept their experiences of vulnerability as they are, without getting caught up in self-criticism, rumination or overemphasizing negative outcomes.
Self-compassion breaks down our own mental barriers of judgment, making it easier to open up to others. This gives us the power to trust ourselves to handle the outcome, no matter where the expression of vulnerability leads us.
Self-compassion can be cultivated over time, by questioning self-critical narratives and affirming our very human emotional experiences. Rather than being messy or undesirable, with trusted individuals and in a safe environment, vulnerable self-disclosure is a beautiful display of humanity that strengthens love.
