Sony San Diego Studios dropped its latest MLB The Show 24 patch on April 23. The newest update impacts multiple game areas, but franchise mode presentation might be the area receiving the most attention.
Here is a bullet-pointed breakdown from the game’s official site and my commentary on each section.
GENERAL
- New York Mets City Connect uniform has been added.
- Fixed an issue with Dynamic Difficulty while player locked.
- Fixed a crash that could occur when selecting a team in Daily Lineups on Jackie Robinson Day.
With Jackie Robinson Day past, the fix here will mainly impact players in franchise mode who are restarting their journey or heading into their second seasons or beyond.
The Dynamic Difficulty controls, which is still my preferred way to play offline, function better in this year’s game than MLB The Show 23, but having problems while player-locked is a significant issue.
I have yet to play that way this year, so it’s great to see a fix if it’s an approach I take in the future.
ONLINE HEAD-TO-HEAD
- Fixed a crash that could occur after attempting to throw out a baserunner after a walk.
Since Patch 5, I’ve seen crashes in a few different scenarios. Oddly enough, it hasn’t happened in the scenario identified in the bullet point. The most common scenario that I’ve seen crashes in involves the catcher. It has normally been when he stops a potential wild pitch, but the ball remains in front of him, only he never picks it up to throw back to the pitcher.
The game hangs, and you’re forced to restart. In any case, fixing any crash points in a positive.
ROAD TO THE SHOW
- The simulation screen will now match the game scenario in extra innings.
I’ve spent less time in RTTS than in any of the core modes this year. It is the most malnourished and neglected mode in the game’s suite.
While it is still fun to play based on the consistently sound hitter-batter component in every mode, nothing makes it special or stands out from the other features.
FRANCHISE AND MARCH TO OCTOBER
- Teams will now wear their City Connect uniforms for the correct home games during the season.
- Fixed a crash that could occur when entering Franchise or March to October.
Franchise heads will love seeing teams rock the City Connect uniforms on the appropriate days on the schedule. For those of us who love franchise mode gameplay, this is the sort of pleasant surprise that adds to the immersion while you’re toiling along in franchise mode.
MISCELLANEOUS
- Fixed an issue causing some player names to display incorrectly on the back of jerseys.
- Various fixes to presentation and audio.
It has been a tough year for visual player representation with MLB The Show. We had the light point issue with specific player faces; the little heads meshed into player hats, and now this problem with names appearing incorrectly on jerseys.
To their credit, Sony has acted swiftly to fix these issues, but a few more of these kinds of problems have escaped into the wild this year.
DEVELOPER NOTES
- There are no gameplay or live content balance changes at this time.
Despite some of the gripes we hear online from spoiled and entitled gamers, I’ve loved the gameplay in MLB The Show.
I’m a sim player more than a competitive user. I don’t need every perfect-perfect swing to result in a line drive that punctures a hole in the outfield wall and automatically counts for a 5-run HR.
I’m exaggerating because it’s tiresome to read and listen to complaints that can be translated as, “I want to control every outcome with no variables.” That’s just not how baseball works; at the end of the day, The Show is a baseball game.
Long story short, I’m okay with Sony leaving gameplay untouched for the second straight patch.
