Elon Musk one of his lesser-known companies, Neuralink, has unlocked another piece of the sci-fi future Musk’s ventures love to build: control of devices using only your thoughts… and a neural implant.
Musk announced on Twitter Monday that the new product is called “Telepathy.”
“Enables control of your phone or computer, and through them almost any device, just by thinking,” the billionaire serial entrepreneur tweeted. “Imagine if Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a speed typist or auctioneer. That is the goal.”’
Musk added that the first users will be people who have lost use of their limbs.
The announcement came shortly after he also announced on Twitter that the first human had received an implant from the company on Sunday and was recovering well.
“Initial results show promising neuron spike detection,” Musk added.
The start-up announced in September that it was seeking volunteers for human trials of the brain implant chip.
Neuralink has previously placed implants in the brains of monkeys and demonstrated their ability to appear to control simple video games via the chip.
While Musk has often touted restoring capabilities to people who have lost use of their motor skills, he’s also spoken of the need for humans to keep pace with artificial intelligence as his motivation for working on Neuralink.
